XY Lab, pre-assembled
← XY Lab ← XY One
The XY Lab flexure stage: a closed square frame on a cross-shaped base with slotted mounting arms, and two stepper motors fitted to its drive blocks.
Fig. S1 — The XY Lab stage with both motors fitted, rendered from the source CAD. One printed body; nothing slides.
Pre-assembledBuilt to order

XY Lab, assembled.

The same nanometre-scale flexure stage, printed, fitted and checked for you — with its drivers and microcontroller in the box.

Two ways to get one

Print it yourself, or let us.

The design is open and stays open. Buying one pays for the printer time, the hardware and the hour at the bench — and keeps the files free for everyone else.

Option AOpen source

Assemble it yourself.

≈ ₹1,500in parts
files free
  1. Print the body on a printer that holds a clean 0.5 mm wall. PETG is recommended.
  2. Buy the motors, drivers and an Arduino Nano from the parts list in the repository.
  3. Bolt the motors on, wire them up, and drive it.

Free for personal, educational and non-commercial research use under the F²R Hardware License.

Option BPre-assembled

Buy it assembled.

₹2,500per stage
shipping included
  • Body printed in one piece, both stepper motors fitted and coupled to their lead screws, guide rods installed.
  • The electronics: stepper drivers and your choice of Arduino Nano or ESP32.
  • Checked on both axes before dispatch.
  • Shipped to you anywhere in India, at no extra cost.

Power it from any 12 V, 2 A DC adapter with a barrel plug — not included.

MountingBolts to a 25 mm-grid breadboard

The slide holder hangs on folded flexure blades and nothing else, so there is no friction to overcome and no backlash to unwind. Precision comes from the geometry in the CAD file, which is why a printed part can do this at all.

Put it under a microscope, an alignment setup, or a mask projector for step-and-repeat lithography. See how it writes →

Good to know

  • Figures come from video-tracking characterisation and may vary between builds. Interferometric validation is the next step.
  • In lithography, feature size is set by your optics. The stage decides where each field lands.
  • Power comes from a 12 V, 2 A DC adapter, which is not in the box.
  • Travel is about 3 mm a side. If you need centimetres, you want a bearing stage.
How ordering works

Four steps, one human.

  1. Order

Fill in a short form: Arduino Nano or ESP32, your name, phone number and shipping address with PIN code.

  2. Confirm

We get in touch by phone or email with a dispatch date and our UPI ID. Nothing is charged before this.

  3. Pay

By UPI. ₹2,500 a stage, with shipping within India already included.

  4. Ship

Your stage is printed, assembled and checked on both axes with its own electronics, then packed and shipped.

Before you orderAsk us more

The things buyers ask.

Does it come with the electronics?

Yes. Both motors come fitted, with the stepper drivers and your choice of microcontroller in the box. The one thing you add is power: any 12 V, 2 A DC adapter with a barrel plug. ₹2,500 covers everything else, including shipping within India.

Arduino Nano or ESP32?

Both drive the stage. The Nano is the simpler board and the one in our parts list. The ESP32 is faster and adds Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which helps if you want to fold the stage into a larger, networked setup. Same price either way.

What is the difference between XY Lab and XY One?

XY One was the first stage, the one that showed a printed flexure resolving increments below 20 nm. XY Lab is the body that came next: a cross-shaped base that bolts flat to an optical table, a closed frame around the slide holder, and guide rods that stop the drive blocks yawing. XY Lab is the one we build for sale.

Why buy it if the files are free?

Because a 0.5 mm flexure blade is unforgiving to print, and your time is worth more than the difference. If you already have a well-tuned printer, build your own — that is exactly what the files are for.

How were the numbers measured?

A marker on the slide holder, filmed at 20 frames per second and tracked frame by frame against a calibrated scale with sub-pixel centroid fitting. The full runs and their caveats are on the XY Lab page.

Can I order several, or something custom?

Yes. For more than one stage, a modified body, a different mounting pattern or a lab set, write to us or call. A human reads every message.
